The Story about the Death of Imaam Abee Zur’ah – Narrated by Shaykh al-Bukharee

Shaykh ‘Abdullaah al-Bukhaaree narrated this story in one of his lectures. The audio link has been given at the end.

….Indeed, the actions are how they get sealed.
Imaam Ibn ul-Qayyim says: “Life is how it is spent in the last stage and actions are how it gets sealed in the end.”

And I would like to mention a story on this occasion and I hope that it will move the souls (towards good). So that we may know how they (i.e. the salaf) used to live, and how they used to be truthful to Allah in their endeavors, sincerity and action.

Imaam Ibn Abee Haatim narrated in the introduction of “al-Jarh Wa at-Ta’deel”, and al-Haakim in “al-Ma’rifah” and Ibn al-Bannaa’ in “Fadl at-Tahleel wa Thawaabuhu al-Jazeel” with an acceptable (Hassan) chain of narration till Imaam Muhammad bin Muslim bin Waarah (rahimahullaah) who said:
Aboo Haatim ar-Raazee, al-Mundhir bin Shaadhaan and myself were present when Aboo Zur’ah ‘Ubaydillaah bin ‘Abdil Kareem ar-Raazee was on his deathbed in the agony of death. Then I said to Aboo Haatim to come and recite the Shahadah. Aboo Haatim said: “Indeed, I feel shy to recite the Shahadah to Aboo Zur’ah (out of awe of Aboo Zur’ah). But let’s come and read to him the Hadeeth so that he might be reminded and perhaps then he will recite it himself.”

Muhammad bin Muslim bin Waarah said: “It was narrated to us by Muhammad bin Bashshaar, who said it was narrated to us by Aboo Aasim an-Nabeel, who said it was narrated to us by ‘Abdul Hameed bin Ja’far from Saalih..

Muhammad bin Muslim said: Then the Hadeeth over whelmed me and it was as if I have never read or heard it, out of awe of Imaam Aboo Zur’ah. So, Aboo Haatim said: “It was narrated to us by Muhammad bin Bashshaar, who said it was narrated to us by Aboo Aasim an-Nabeel, who said it was narrated to us by ‘Abdul Hameed bin Ja’far from Saalih..

Aboo Haatim said: Then the Hadeeth over whelmed me and it was as if I have never read or heard it, out of awe of Imaam Aboo Zur’ah.
At this point, Aboo Zur’ah understood that these two were trying to narrate to him the Hadeeth regarding reminding the dying one to say the Shahadah. So he said, while lying on his deathbed, : : “It was narrated to us by Muhammad bin Bashshaar, who said it was narrated to us by Aboo Aasim an-Nabeel, who said it was narrated to us by ‘Abdul Hameed bin Ja’far from Saalih bin Abee ‘Areeb, from Katheer bin Murrah, from Mu’aadh bin Jabal (radiyallaah ‘anh) that the prophet (sallallaah ‘alayhi wasallam) said:
He whose last statement from this world is ‘laa ilaaha illallaah….

He (i.e. Muhammad bin Muslim bin Waarah) said: His soul exited his body on the alphabet Haa (i.e. the last alphabet in the statement “laa ilaaha illa Allaah”). And the remaining part of the Hadeeth is “…will enter the Paradise”

O my loved ones! These people were truthful to the covenant of Allah. By way of knowledge, actions, seeking nearness and obedience to Allah.
And by way of being devoted to Allah in explaining this creed, and this brilliant and bright Sunnah. They were truthful to Allah, and Allah proved them truthful…
